The Power of the Purse: Financial Abuse in Marriage

The Power of the Purse Financial Abuse in Marriage by Fabienne Swartz

{5:05 minutes to read} In a previous blog, I discussed the importance of knowing what you are signing when filing a joint tax return. While devastating, and potentially life altering, tax fraud is only one facet of financial abuse. In a large context, financial abuse can be found in every demographic, in every socioeconomic stratum.

Before You Sign a Joint Tax Return, Be Aware of What You’re Signing!

Before You Sign a Joint Tax Return, Be Aware of What You’re Signing! by Fabienne Swartz

{3:55 minutes to read} Tax time is a great prompt—for some people the only prompt—to think about finances. I have found that many of my clients actually know very little about the marital finances, trusting instead that their spouse will make appropriate decisions. Unfortunately, women who do that are putting themselves at risk for a variety of reasons:

Hidden Figures: When the Numbers Tell You Something You Don’t Want to Hear

Hidden Figures: When the Numbers Tell You Something You Don’t Want to Hear by Fabienne Swartz

{3:30 minutes to read} A friend of mine has a problem. She is in the middle of a divorce, yet she remains wedded to a lifestyle she can no longer afford. The bulk of the expenses she is claiming are what I would consider unnecessary, like:

  • Retaining a full-time housekeeper;
  • Outfitting her children with designer clothes;
  • Driving a high-end, German car;
  • Grocery shopping at Whole Foods; and
  • Monthly clothing budget in excess of what many people earn in a month.

Divorce is difficult, and one of the most difficult things about it is figuring out how to pay for two households when there was once only one. In 99% of divorces, the discretionary cash decreases as a result, but that does not mean the quality of life needs to decrease.

Multilevel Marketing: A Viable Option for Busy Moms and Dads

Multilevel Marketing: A Viable Option for Busy Moms and Dads by Fabienne Swartz

{3:29 minutes to read} Network marketing, or multilevel marketing (MLM), is a type of direct-to-consumer business that relies on a decentralized network of sales representatives to market a product. MLM companies generally have no fixed hours like a traditional 9-5 job, which presents a viable income source for families with young children—as well as retirees living on a fixed income.

Jokes About Money Undercut Women’s Authority

Jokes About Money Undercut Women’s Authority by Fabienne Swartz

{3:07 minutes to read} In a recent article titled “Why Men Need To Stop Making This Joke About Women,” author Vanessa McGrady sheds light on a problem that is often covered up with uncomfortable laughter and avoiding eye contact. She relays the story of attending a special event where a man addressed the room for a toast and began to make jokes about how his wife is so good at spending “his” money. McGrady alleges that this sort of talk is bad for women, men, and children alike.

Now Is the Winter of Our Self-Improvement by Fabienne Swartz

Do you feel like you don’t have much say in the family finances?

Are you hiding some of your expenses?

Do you feel like there’s a power imbalance in your marriage?

Do you ever worry how you would survive financially in the case of
divorce, disability, or death of your spouse?

Do you worry about rejoining the workforce?

Are you nervous about what your income potential is?

Many women believe that they cannot manage money. I sought to shatter this self-limiting belief with the founding of my company, Financially Strong—and that meant coming up with a tagline, too. I had to make it clear that there are ways out of financial isolation, there are ways to be self-sufficient—and most importantly, there are ways to create the life that you want and deserve.

My goal (and my tagline) is Empowering women to be proactive in their financial lives.

This winter I aim to do just that with the help of several thought leaders who have helped thousands of women take control of their financial lives, through:

  • Career coaching;
  • General wellness;
  • Financial planning;
  • Insurance planning; and
  • Estate planning.

Whether you are happily married, unhappily married, or single, now is the time to start thinking about how you can ensure the financial and emotional stability of your family, no matter what happens.

We will kick off with a presentation about tapping into an income stream as a distributor for targeted, network marketing companies on November 17. The companies that will be represented include Isagenix, Market America, Shaklee, Stella and Dot, and more. Also joining us will be a team-builder from New York Life with even more employment opportunities.

On December 15 Lorna Gager, Certified Transformational Life Coach, will delve into accessible techniques to seize the day, every day.

Come and learn the tools you need to get unstuck if you’re feeling stuck; to become powerful if you’re feeling powerless; to lean in if you’re feeling stretched out. Do it for your own good, not because a divorce might be lurking. The choice is yours: Do you want to be a lamb and hide your purchases and beg for an allowance—or do you want to be a lioness, fully in charge of her life and her pride?

{4:46 minutes to read} In today’s world, it is vital to have as many financial resources as possible. Credit cards are often lifesavers, making it possible to catch a last-minute flight or even get an extended-stay suite. An important step to standing on your own and becoming financially strong is establishing your credit as an individual—something that can be done only with time and patience, and with the wise utilization of credit accounts. So what goes into your credit rating, and how do you make it better?
