Refueling With Self-Care

Refueling With Self-Care by Fabienne Swartz

{1:41 minutes to read} If we give, give, give, give, give and do not create time for self-care, all that’s left of us is an empty gas tank—as opposed to a functional and happy person.

Loving and honoring oneself is the only way to ensure that you can do the same for the ones you love—and this is accomplished by dedicating time for enjoyable activities that refill the tank.

New mothers are frequently caught in this trap of giving without refueling. The needs of the children and/or a significant other are often prioritized over the self, ultimately resulting in a shadow of the complete person.

For anyone who experiences this, it is always important to remember and ask yourself: If I do not take care of myself, how can I take care of the people that I care about?

From that acknowledgment, you can take active measures to ensure that your gas tank is filled. I often advise my clients to bookend their days with an act of self-care in the morning and one in the evening.

To start, it is helpful to make a list of all the things you enjoy and pick activities to do every single day. This could include:

  • Reading a book;
  • Taking a walk;
  • Knitting;
  • Cooking;
  • Scrapbooking; or
  • Going to the gym…it can be anything.

Daily routines are also helpful. You can start your morning and/or end your day with an exercise like:

  • Stretching;
  • Listening to audiobooks from inspirational thinkers;
  • Yoga; or
  • Meditation.

When you take care of yourself, you feel better; and the act of caring for others is enjoyable rather than obligatory.

It is important that you look out for YOU! Self-care does not mean you are selfish; in fact, the opposite is true. You are ensuring that you have the optimal capacity to give to the ones that you love!
