Practicing Gratitude

Practicing Gratitude by Fabienne Swartz

The holidays are the perfect time to reflect upon our many blessings, but gratitude is best practiced on a daily basis. In this post, I aim to do something different: offer my own experiences reflecting on my life.

My journey to gratitude started when I began reading a book called The Miracle Morning, by Hal Elrod. This easy read inspired me to get up everyday at five in the morning so that I would have time for some self-improvement before the start of the day: meditation, journaling, working out, and reading.

Part of my meditation routine is dedicated to practicing gratitude. Research shows that when people demonstrate gratitude, they are happier and more successful—two goals that everyone shares.

Some little and big things I am grateful for include:

  • Appreciating a warm cup of coffee when it’s cold and dark in the early morning—as opposed to gulping it down or taking it in intravenously.
  • Getting a hug or having a great conversation with one of my children.
  • The input of friends and colleagues about the work that I do and how I do it.

If you don’t want to meditate, you can achieve a similar effect by just thinking about small things to be grateful for. There is at least one thing every day that you can be grateful for. When you find that one thing, put it in a journal. Sometimes I journal for 30-40 minutes, which I believe would be a beneficial practice for my clients to engage in. Begin and end your journaling session with something positive.

As you search through your days to find reasons to be grateful, know that I am extremely grateful to have you in my circle—and from my heart to yours: enjoy this holiday season. I look forward to connecting with you again in the new year!

I would love to hear what you are grateful for. Send me your musings!
