One of the most practical pieces of advice I offer to my clients is something I learned from my own experience: Forget your problems, not your passions. Pursuing a hobby, sport or artistic pursuit does more than just take your mind off of your problems. In my case, it was my love of tennis that gave me respite and kept me grounded through my divorce.

That is the reason why I am proud to be co-sponsoring the MBYC-Loriet Tennis Invitational Tournament. The event is an official USTA qualifying event, and will feature intense competition between the area’s top semi-professional players. Of course, tennis isn’t the only way to turn your thoughts away from your divorce and toward the future.

Some people love writing because they can “file” the feelings they articulate on paper (or the screen). Filing means that there is a feeling of closure; one expresses their anger and will no longer dwell on it.

Some people love reading because it engages their minds and transports them to a new world of their choosing.

Some people find that concentrating on their work is not only profitable financially but also psychologically.

Some people find solace in physically exerting themselves. Shortly before my own divorce I took part in the New York City AVON39 Walk Against Breast Cancer – 39 miles in 2 days. I was able to clear my head and I met countless inspiring women in the process, many of whom were quite happily divorced.

I hope that you will think about your passions and how you can steer the narrative of your divorce into a happier and more productive voice for you and your spouse.

If you are in the area, I encourage you to come join me at the Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht club next weekend to talk about your divorce from a whole-istic perspective!
